I’ve been procrastinating for a while (the truth is i’ve been procrastinating for years!)
The irony is that I’ve been doing a lot of things/work lately (over the past years)
Two weeks back, I actually felt miserable for not doing anything productive. I was not motivated enough to do any work. I felt like I was burnout doing work.
I went down the rabbit hole of observing and self-reflecting my current state at that time and ended up discovering more truths about my work pattern and my addiction to Type 2 procrastination (I’ll get to the types in a bit)
This was my root thought for me to have been unmotivated and procrastinating
In the process of reflection and research, I discovered brilliant nuggets of information on the internet
Types of Procrastination - Rory Vaden
- Classic Procrastination ”Classic procrastination is consciously delaying what we know we should be doing”
- Creative Avoidance “Creative avoidance is different, and this is something that people do as an art form. Creative avoidance is subconsciously creating things for yourself to do so that you can do those things as a means of feeling productive, but really it’s a giant scheme for avoiding doing the things you know you should be doing even when you don’t feel like doing it.”
- Priority Dilution “The third type of procrastination is called priority dilution, and this is fascinating, … [because] priority dilution is the chronic overachiever’s form of procrastination. What’s different about it is, unlike the first two, … priority dilution is not about being lazy or disengaged or distracted, but it is the same net result of the first two, which is … you leave the office or you end your day with your most significant priorities incomplete, not because you’re lazy, but because you allowed your attention to shift to less significant but perhaps more urgent tasks.”
This piece of information got me into reflecting on the bad habit of procrastination that I have been having over years.
I have actually noticed that I am addicted to problem solving and I tend to do it all the time. It’s just I’m failing to pick and solve the right problems that I should be solving for desired outcome.
Perhaps you have also fallen into the trap of procrastinating while convincing yourself that you are being productive.
